If you've never practised canyoning, you may be unsure of its definition... Here's what you need to eliminate your doubts! Canyoning, also known as canyoneering, is a sport that involves a sporting activity combining hiking, climbing, swimming and abseiling in natural canyons.
Often confused with rafting, canyoning does not use boats but is done on foot in or along the bed of a river or stream. More sporty than aquatic trekking, canyoning takes place in narrow gorges or ravines, at the heart of waterfalls, with suitable equipment, i.e. a helmet, harness and ropes.
Réunion's waterways are an ideal playground for thrill-seekers and beginners alike. When it comes to canyoning, you're spoilt for choice!

Descending the Rivière des Roches canyon is considered an unforgettable experience. water walk and not like canyoning, as you won't be using ropes. However, you can try out jumps of between 4 and 8 metres into pools of water, natural slides and swimming in the river, while admiring clear waterfalls.
Particularly suitable for families with children aged 8 or 10 and overThe descent of the Rivière des Roches is great fun. In this part of Réunion Island, in the north-east near Saint-Benoit, you will be immersed in an environment of basalt rock, surrounded by lush green vegetation.
To finish on a high note, a zip line awaits you for a safe flight over the canyon, before arriving at Bassin La Paix, one of Réunion's most beautiful basins, surrounded by basalt organs.
This Introduction to canyoning lasts about 3 hours. You must be able to swim.
Also in the north-east of Réunion, a few kilometres south-east of Saint-Denis, near the Cascade Niagara and the Bassin Bœuf, the Sainte-Suzanne canyon is surrounded by magnificent vegetation. The first part of the canyon, known as the " Sainte-Suzanne classic "is a family-friendly introductory course. It is available fromage 6-7.
In the Sainte-Suzanne canyon, you'll cross 8 pools, with abseils, jumps, swimming and zip-line descents all part of the experience. For the less adventurous, the course allows you to avoid every leap into the water.
The River Sainte-Suzanne also flows through a cave for around twenty metres just before flowing into a pool. In the final pool, you can enjoy a zip line, jumps (9m) and/or abseiling.
This introductory canyoning course lasts half a day.. As with all canyoning, you must be able to swim.
At the southern tip of Réunion, in what is known as the "Wild South", the Langevin Canyon is one of the most popular. Accessible from age 7it is ideal for beginners.
This canyoning trip begins with a 60-metre zip-line descent to the basin of the majestic Langevin waterfall. You can take a dip in the turquoise waters of this pool.
Afterwards, you'll alternate between clear water pools, jumps from 1 to 7 metres and abseils, including a 15-metre "full vacuum" abseil (optional). The sensations are guaranteed in the big slide and the combined slide/tyrolean traverse. This is a varied canyon, which is once again great fun, allowing you to a gentle introduction to canyoningwhile enjoying the magnificent scenery of this canyon.
For a more challenging canyoning experience, we recommend the Canyon Langevin - Grand Galet route, for those aged 12 and over.
If you are looking for a canyon with a slightly higher level of difficulty, suitable for pre-teens and teensvisit the Cirque de Cilaos.
The Fleur Jaune canyon is renowned for the beauty of the scenery it traverses, making it one of the most popular canyons on Réunion Island. In this canyon, you will cross a ravine made of polished rock.
Very vertical, the Fleur Jaune canyon is more sporty than the previous canyons. You'll have to do 8 abseils (up to 55m high) and jumps. A 45-minute via-ferrata takes you out of the canyon. The descent from the canyon is not only sporty, but also aesthetically pleasing, as you can admire the island's highest peaks (Piton des Neiges and Gros Morne).
Suitable for teenagers aged 13 and over, the Fleur jaune canyon takes 3 hours to complete (not the entire route).
The Bras Rouge canyon, also located in the Cilaos cirque, has its source in the heart of the Piton des Neiges. In this a fun and sporty introductory canyonA series of jumps, abseils of around 25m and slides await you in an ochre and red coloured ravine.
The course lasts 3 hours and is suitable for participants aged 12 and over..
